Dozens of demonstrators were arrested on Wednesday as Hong Kong's anti-government protests spiralled into chaotic scenes on New Year's Day. Earlier in the day, police fired tear gas and water cannon at crowds of protesters who had gathered for a largely peaceful march, including families.
Hong Kong has been embroiled in more than six months of anti-government protests that have now spilled into 2020, with protesters demanding full democracy and an independent inquiry into allegations of police brutality.
