Dutton, Frydenberg at odds over Wuhan evacuation flight cost

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says Australians evacuated from Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, will not be charged to fly home despite cabinet colleague Peter Dutton telling Sky News the opposite just an hour earlier.

Mr Frydenberg said earlier advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs which suggested Australians would be charged $1,000 fly out of China was incorrect.

Earlier the home affairs minister told Sky News he was briefed there was a “precedent” in place and they would be charged to return.

“I don’t think it’s inappropriate that there is that charge, there is a recovery of at least some of the cost that we’re expending for that charter flight,” Mr Dutton said.

The treasurer later said that advice – which Prime Minister Scott Morrison touted as the standard rule just days ago – was wrong.
