According to SCMP, Xi said that instability in Hong Kong "seriously tramples the law and social order".
The Beijing view supports Hong Kong police to use force to deal with protesters and call for severe punishment of those who break the law.
The statement was made when Xi was in Brazil's capital Brasilia to attend the BRICS conference. Xi said it was imperative to end violence and restore order in Hong Kong.
"We continue to support the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with the leadership of the special chief in accordance with the law," the Chinese news agency Xinhua quoted Xi. "We support the Hong Kong police to enforce the law rigorously and the Hong Kong judiciary severely punishes offenders."
He also emphasized that China's view of the "one-state, two-regime" policy in Hong Kong will not change and resolutely oppose outside forces to interfere in Hong Kong's situation. "Violence in Hong Kong seriously challenges the fundamentals of a one-country, two-regime model",
BRICS is a group of 5 emerging economies, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. This is the second time Xi has spoken publicly about Hong Kong. The first time was during a meeting with the Hong Kong leader in Shanghai.
